First Saturday Practice Session Report - Results

Juan Pablo Montoya set the fastest time of the session just 0.081 seconds ahead of his team-mate Ralf Schumacher with David Coulthard in 3rd. Michael Schumacher, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6.

It was a session of contrasts. When the track was wet (or mainly wet), Ferrari and the rest of the Bridgestone runners were so dominant that at one stage 9 out of the 10 fastest times were set on Bridgestone tyres. Once the Michelin runners switched to dry tyres in the final minutes of the session, they topped the timesheets.
In any case the times aren't that indicative as several drivers didn't go out on dry tyres at the end of the session including the 2 Ferraris. The second session will certainly give us a better picture provided that the track remains dry!.

A number of cars spun during the session, Pedro de la Rosa lost it without setting a time while the 2 Jordans had more than a spin but kept there cars going. Barrichello and Montoya also spun off during the session but recovered.
Eddie Irvine failed to set a competitive time as he struggled with his R3.

Olivier Panis covered the most number of laps with 17 followed by Enrique Bernoldi with 16. Pedro de la Rosa only managed 3 laps, Eddie Irvine and Nick Heidfeld only did 5 and Jarno Trulli only covered 6 laps. All other drivers covered between 9 and 15 laps.

Rain is not forecast for the next session so we should get a better idea of where the teams stand heading into Qualifying.
