First Friday Practice Session Report - Results

Michael Schumacher sets the fastest time of the session ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and Rubens Barrichello. Kimi Raikkonen, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

The Italian fans would be delighted to see a similar result to this on Sunday, with both their Ferrari cars and an Italian on the podium, and they might get that as the weather is expected to remain more or less cold and wet!.

The session started very slowly with only a few cars setting lap times early in the session as the track was very wet and any running at that time was too risky. Takuma Sato took on the job of clearing as much water as he could while he was familiarising himself with the track.
20 minutes into the session and a few other drivers go out on the track, namely the 2 Arrows drivers and Sato's team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella.
It was just before the 30-minute mark that several drivers started coming out onto the track and Fisichella and the 2 Jaguar's traded fastest laps. That was until Michael Schumacher went out and on his second flyer set a fastest time that was over 2 seconds faster than anyone else including his own team-mate.
The session ended with Michael Schumacher remaining at the top after he improved his time a further 2 seconds while Fisichella put in a very fast lap in the final minute of the session to go second and only 0.6 seconds behind Michael. Rubens Barrichello was third and 0.788 seconds behind.
Kimi Raikkonen was the best Michelin runner in 4th while his team-mate David Coulthard was 9th. Ralf Schumacher was 8th while his team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya was down in 19th place.
The Toyota team were struggling with Salo and McNish in 21st and 22nd and over 9 seconds off the pace!

The session had few incidents as the drivers seemed to be careful not to damage their cars although Sato, Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher all suffered spins.

Takuma Sato covered the most number of laps with 22 followed by Giancarlo Fisichella with 18. Mark Webber covered the least number of laps with 7 while Mika Salo only managed 9 laps. All other drivers covered between 10 and 16 laps.

While not much should be read into these time, the conditions are certainly favouring the Bridgestone runners although one must not take away the credit to those drivers who impress in the wet like Fisichella, Raikkonen, Frentzen and Trulli.

The second session is expected to be wet as well so not much will change!
