Second Friday Practice Session Report - Results

Ferrari continued at the top of the timesheets in the second session with Michael Schumacher improving his time ahead of Rubens Barrichello. The margin to McLaren was almost wiped out though with Kimi Raikkonen in 3rd under 0.3 seconds off the pace while David Coulthard managed 4th fastest only a tenth of a second behind his team-mate.
Ralf Schumacher was 4th but the Williams is still over 0.8 seconds off the pace and Eddie Irvine managed 6th in a dramatic improvement from his morning pace which could indicate a time set under light fuel load. That said, Jaguar did show an improvement in France so they might have found a better setup.
Juan Pablo Montoya lies in 7th ahead of Felipe Massa while McNish continues his strong form in 9th ahead of Heinz Harald Frentzen in 10th.

The field is very close at this stage with Irvine in 6th and Button in 19th separated by just over a second.

The session had numerous incidents, first it was Yoong who spun out into the gravel then it was Trulli going off. Olivier Panis stopped on the track with problems and Fisichella had his session cut short by an engine failure.
There were also several spins during the session as the drivers continued learning the track and going over the limit!.

The gaps between the team-mates shrunk this session although Irvine was over half a second faster than de la Rosa and so was McNish ahead of his team-mate Salo.

Renault are struggling on this track with their drivers in 19th and 20th!. A reminder of the Benetton's of last year but they should improve.

Ralf Schumacher covered the most number of laps with 31 followed by Jacques Villeneuve with 30 and Rubens Barrichello and Juan Pablo Montoya with 29 laps each. Jarno Trulli only managed 2 laps, Alex Yoong and Olivier Panis only did 3 laps each.
Overall for today, Villeneuve covered a massive 52 laps while Rubens Barrichello, Juan Pablo Montoya and Takuma Sato covered 49 laps each. Jarno Trulli and Pedro de la Rosa only managed 25 laps each today.

Once again we've seen the Michelin runners crawl their way back into contention as the track temperatures move up. It will be an interesting Saturday.
