First Friday Practice Session Report - Results

Rubens Barrichello sets the fastest time of the session and almost 1.5 seconds ahead of his team-mate Michael Schumacher. Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard, Jarno Trulli and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.

The session was mainly run on a wet track after heavy rains overnight and Michael Schumacher was the first to set a timed lap under these conditions and his times were very good compared to the rest of the field including Barrichello. It was only in the last minute that Barrichello managed to set a time much quicker than Michael and that was mainly due to the drying track.
Both McLaren drivers were late in setting lap times. In fact Mika Hakkinen took over 20 minutes to go out on his installation lap. They eventually finished the session 3rd and 4th close behind the Ferraris.
Despite the mixed conditions, 5th and 6th place were also team-mates with Trulli and Frentzen while Raikkonen was an impressive 7th on his first run on this track, Panis in 8th with Irvine and Villeneuve making the top 10.

Jos Verstappen failed to put in a timed lap as his car stopped during his installation lap at the start of the session.
There were several spins during the session but everyone managed to recover. Ralf Schumacher spun twice as he was trying dry tyres while Coulthard, Frentzen and Burti all spun but recovered.

Both Jarno Trulli and Enrique Bernoldi covered the most number of laps with 24. A number of drivers did 20 laps. Jos Verstappen failed to cover any lap while Fernando Alonso only managed 7 laps and was almost 19 seconds off the pace. Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard only did 12 laps while Jacques Villeneuve did 13. Most other drivers did between 17 and 20 laps.

The Michelin tyres appear to be behind Bridgestone under these conditions with Irvine the fastest of the Michelin runners in 9th. The Michelin runners occupy the places from 14th til 21st.

The second session should give us a better idea of how the teams will shape under dry conditions as the track should be mostly dry by then.
