Second Friday Practice Session Report - Results

Michael Schumacher remained at the top of the timesheets after the second session just ahead of his team-mate Rubens Barrichello and Mika Hakkinen in the McLaren. The three were the only drivers to lap under the 1:17 mark and were all over half a second faster than the much improved Ralf Schumacher in 4th. Eddie Irvine was 5th with Jean Alesi making his debut for Jordan in 6th place.
Fisichella was also impressive managing 7th ahead of Nick Heidfeld, Olivier Panis and David Coulthard who failed to complete a single lap due to the damage sustained to his car from the first session.

It was an interesting session with the times continuing to tumble and with a lot of drivers spinning harmlessly. Tarso Marques however damaged his car as a result of one of his spins and Pedro de la Rosa stuck his car in the gravel in the final minute of the session.

It is hard to determine if the Jaguars and the Benettons are really on the pace or whether they we trying qualifying trims. At the same time some of the usual top 10 runners were way back with Raikkonen down in 15th and Villeneuve in 16th.

There also appears to be a relatively big difference between some of the team-mates, R Schumacher 4th - Montoya 13th, Irvine 5th - de la Rosa 11th, Alesi 6th - Trulli 12th, Fisichella 7th - Button 17th, Heidfeld 8th - Raikkonen 15th and Panis 9th while Villeneuve in 16th.
Expect those gaps to shrink tomorrow in qualifying.

During this session, Michelin appeared to have closed the gap to Bridgestone with 3 cars in the top 10 running their tyres (compared to just one during the first session). The temperatures did go up slightly and the track had more grip which could be the reason behind their improved performance.

Both Jean Alesi and Heinz Harald Frentzen made impressive debuts for their new teams with Alesi setting the 6th fastest time ahead of his team-mate Trulli while Frentzen managed 14th while Burti was 21st.

Michael Schumacher covered the most number of laps this session with 28 with Jarno Trulli behind with 25 laps and both Olivier Panis and Ralf Schumacher with 24 laps each.
David Coulthard failed to complete a single lap while Kimi Raikkonen only covered 9 laps and Jacques Villeneuve only managed 14 laps. All other drivers covered between 15 and 23 laps.

Overall it was Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher who covered the most number of laps with 41 laps followed by Olivier Panis with 40 laps. David Coulthard only managed 9 laps and Jean Alesi covered 20.

The session was run under sunny skies with air temperatures reaching 32 degrees.
