Race Report - Results

Michael Schumacher wins his 52nd Grand Prix breaking the all time record number of wins

In an incident packed Belgian Grand Prix Michael Schumacher wins ahead of David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella in the much improved Benetton. Mika Hakkinen was 4th ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Jarno Trulli.

There was drama from the start with Frentzen who was 4th on the grid stalling on the starting grid. On the second formation lap, Montoya who was on Pole stalled and after his mechanics started his car he started from the back of the grid alongside Frentzen.
At the start Ralf Schumacher got away well as did Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. Giancarlo Fisichella starting from 8th managed to get up to 4th followed by Villeneuve and the 2 McLarens.
On the first lap Michael Schumacher passes Ralf Schumacher and takes the lead while the 2 McLaren's manage to get ahead of Villeneuve.
A couple of laps later the McLarens also manage to pass Fisichella.

The safety car was deployed on lap 6 following a horrific crash when Irvine and Burti touched with both going off and Burti having lost the front wing of his car crashing straight into the tyre barriers at high speed. Burti was removed from his car by the medical staff and was taken to hospital. He has suffered a concussion and his condition is described as stable. The race was stopped as a result of the accident.

The race was reduced to 36 laps and the grid positions were determined based on the order on the lap prior to the race being stopped. Race start order - Michael Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello, Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella.

On the formation lap, Ralf Schumacher who was in second had trouble getting on the line and was forced to start from the back. At the start Michael Schumacher led the race and an amazing start from Giancarlo Fisichella moved him into second ahead of Barrichello and Coulthard.
Pedro de la Rosa and Nick Heidfeld touched going into La Source and both had to retire. On the following lap Juan Pablo Montoya suffers a blown engine and retires.

As the cars were not allowed to re-fuel at the start of the reduced race all the car on a 2 stop strategy started to pit 7 laps into the race.
Following the first round of pit stops the order was - Michael Schumacher leading Giancarlo Fisichella and David Coulthard. Hakkinen, Barrichello and Trulli made the top 6. Barrichello lost two places through the pits.

With Fisichella holding Coulthard, Michael Schumacher was increasing his gap over the rest of the field. By lap 16 Michael was 24 seconds ahead of Fisichella.

On lap 18 Barrichello lost his front wing going over the curbs at the Bus Stop and had to complete a full lap without a front wing. He lost 4 positions by the time he managed to get back to the pits.
A lap later Jenson Button does the same but he spins and crashes as a result of losing the front wing.

Following the second round of pit stops Michael Schumacher retained the lead and amazingly Giancarlo Fisichella held onto second place ahead of David Coulthard. Mika Hakkinen, Trulli and Alesi made the top 6.

On lap 28 Coulthard finally manages to pass Fisichella for second while on lap32 Barrichello manages to pass Alesi for 6th place.
Just a lap later Jarno Trulli's bad luck continues as his Honda engine blows moving Barrichello up into 5th and Alesi into 6th. Ralf Schumacher now in 7th place tries his best to get past Alesi for 6th place without success.

So at the end of one of the strangest races in recent memory, Michael Schumacher wins the race ahead of David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella. Hakkinen, Barrichello and Alesi make the top 6.

We will keep you updated on Luciano Burti's condition and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Michael Schumacher has now broken the all time record number of wins with 52 career wins. This is his 8th win of the season and has scored 104 points in the championship. David Coulthard is now 9 points clear of Rubens Barrichello and 13 points ahead of Ralf Schumacher.

Ferrari now have 152 points while McLaren increase their lead over Williams to 22 points (81 to 59)

With Fisichella finishing 3rd, the Benetton team appears to have improved dramatically as they were very competitive. Fisichella gave both the Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello and the McLaren of David Coulthard a very hard time.

Jarno Trulli continues his string of retirements now with 4 in a row. Luciano Burti has also retired from the last 4 races while this was Eddie Irvine's 3 retirement in a row.
It was also the second time in 3 races where both Sauber's retire. Incidentally, it was the second time in 3 races that Heidfeld and Pedro de la Rosa crash into each other.
With Ralf Schumacher finishing 7th, it was the first time for him to finish outside the points when he manages to finish a race.
Juan Pablo Montoya  has now retired 10 times out of 14 attempts this season.
