Race Report - ResultsMichael Schumacher wins his 9th race
of the season and his second in a row at Suzuka. Juan Pablo Montoya
finishes second with David Coulthard in third. Michael Schumacher kept his lead at the
start with Montoya and Ralf behind him. Barrichello starting from 4th
managed to overtake Ralf on the first lap as he was on a light fuel load.
Barrichello managed to catch and pass Montoya momentarily however Montoya
managed to take second back from him. Rubens Barrichello was the first of the
front runners to make his pit stop as he was on a 3 stopper and a few laps
later Michael Schumacher pitted and he appeared to also be on a 3 stopper.
Montoya took the lead for a few laps before he pitted giving the lead to
Ralf Schumacher who pitted a few laps later giving the lead to Mika
Hakkinen. When it became apparent that Barrichello
was not benefiting from his 3 stop strategy, it appears that Ferrari
switched Michael to a 2 stopper. Michael Schumacher made his second and
last pit stop on lap 36 giving the lead to Montoya who had to pit a few
laps later as he was unable to gain on Michael due to backmarkers. The top 6 places went to the top 3 teams
and none of the other teams fighting to gain a point or two had the chance
to score. Jenson Button managed to finish 7th putting Benetton Renault
ahead of Jaguar in the Constructor's Championship by the fact that they
have finished 3 times in 7th place against 2 times for Jaguar. Both are on
10 points and both have finished in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th the same number
of times!. Well Michael Schumacher has almost broken all the records in Formula 1. He has the most number of wins, the most number of points, the most number of fastest laps in addition to many other records. The only 2 major records that he has yet to break are the number of World Championships (Fangio won 5) whereas Michael has 4 and the most number of Poles (Ayrton Senna has 65) whereas Michael has 43. The Japanese Grand Prix was the last race
for Jean Alesi, unfortunately he retired after Kimi Raikkonen spun in
front of him. This was the first race were Alesi was not classified as a
finisher this season. This race was also the last for Mika Hakkinen for at
least a year, as a goodwill gesture he gave third place to David
Coulthard. We hope that you've enjoyed the 2001 season
and look forward to the 2002 season with a number of driver changes and a
new team. Ferrari are leaving the season on a high, Williams with Montoya
and Ralf Schumacher are expected to be stronger and more reliable. McLaren
will have to sort out their problems of this season and bounce back and
with the young sensation Kimi Raikkonen driving for them, we could see a
few surprises. Sauber will have young Brazilian Felipe Massa driving from
them. BAR and Jordan will have a new wide-angled Honda engine with
Fisichella and the Japanese star Takuma Sato driving for Jordan. Benetton
become Renault and they are looking stronger with Jarno Trulli hoping to
erase his bad luck from Jordan. Jaguar will be making progress and Arrows
will be using the same Cosworth engines as Jaguar. Prost will be hoping to
get it right for next year and even Minardi will be getting a power boost
by running the AsiaTech engines. And of course Toyota are joining Formula
