First Friday Practice Session Report - Results

Michael Schumacher looks determined to grab his first pole position ever at Silverstone after putting a stunning lap in the first Friday practice with a time of 1:23.619. He was 0.786 seconds faster than his team-mate Rubens Barrichello with Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard making the top 4.
Heinz Harald Frentzen was 5th ahead of Eddie Irvine who struggled early in the session but then improved dramatically towards the end of the session possibly trying out some laps on low fuel. Olivier Panis was 7th ahead of his team-mate Jacques Villeneuve with Trulli in 9th ahead of Kimi Raikkonen in 10th.
The Williams pair of Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya were in 11th and 13th respectively.

Unusually Michael Schumacher was the first to set a timed lap this session possibly due to the lack of testing Ferrari do on this track compared to the British based teams. He also covered 21 laps this session only second to Eddie Irvine who covered 23.
There were no major incidents during the session although a few drivers spun but managed to recover including Button, Montoya and Ralf Schumacher.
Pedro de la Rosa didn't complete any timed laps as his car stopped on the installation lap with a fuel intake problem.

The Michelin runners appear to be struggling here with only Irvine (who could be on a lighter fuel load) in the top 10 while even the Williams are outside the top 10.

Eddie Irvine covered the most number of laps with 23 followed by Michael Schumacher with 21. Pedro de la Rosa didn't cover any laps while Giancarlo Fisichella only managed 5 laps and Luciano Burti covered 13. Most other drivers covered between 15 and 20 laps each.

The session was run under cloudy but dry conditions with an air temperature of 18 degrees.
