Qualifying Session Report - Results

Michael Schumacher grabs his 6 Pole of the season ahead of team-mate Rubens Barrichello. David Coulthard managed to squeeze into 3rd after setting a time that was 0.001 seconds faster than that of Montoya on his final lap. Ralf Schumacher managed the 5th fastest time while Kimi Raikkonen took 6th place.
Jacques Villeneuve in the BAR was 7th and the best of the rest with Jarno Trulli in 8th, Fisichella in 9th and Nick Heidfeld made the top 10. The high expectations from Jaguar did not materialise this session.

As expected Ferrari were dominant. Michael Schumacher was over 0.6 seconds faster than any non-Ferrari driver. He took provisional pole as soon as he completed a flying lap and was never threatened.
The track conditions proved to be very tricky as the temperatures went up several drivers had to abort their first runs (including Michael Schumacher) as they felt their cars weren't setup right.
A number of drivers couldn't adjust to the track conditions and ended up setting lap times that were in fact slower than their best in practice. Those included the 2 Jaguar drivers, Nick Heidfeld and Mika Salo. Alex Yoong didn't improve either but that was mainly due to him spinning out of the session.
In addition to Yoong, several other drivers spun and spoiled their runs but with the exception of Yoong they all managed to recover.

The increased temperature of the track didn't seem to benefit the Michelin runners, in fact the top 10 are evenly split, 5 Bridgestones (1,2,7,9,10) and 5 Michelins (3,4,5,6,8).

The field remains fairly close although not as close as it was during practice. The whole field is covered just over 3 seconds but taking out the 2 Ferraris at the front and Yoong at the back, only 1.8 seconds separates Coulthard in 3rd and Salo in 19th. It should be an exciting battle in the midfield tomorrow.

Jacques Villeneuve in 7th had his best qualifying position this season while Michael Schumacher in 1st and Mark Webber in 18th equalled their best qualifying positions.
Ralf Schumacher in 5th and Mika Salo in 19th equalled their worst qualifying positions this season.

In the battle of the team-mates, Fisichella (9th) once again proved too good for Sato (15) setting a time that was 0.745 seconds faster. Webber (18th) again out-qualified Yoong (20th) by 0.681 and Jarno Trulli (8th) out-qualified Jenson Button (14th) by 0.513 seconds.
Closest were Heidfeld (10th) and Frentzen (11th) with 0.130 seconds separating them. Montoya (4th) was only 0.173 seconds faster than Ralf Schumacher (5th) and David Coulthard (3rd) was just 0.220 seconds faster than Kimi Raikkonen (6th).
