French Grand Prix Race Report.

David Coulthard wins the French Grand Prix ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello. Jacques Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli make the top 6. Michael Schumacher retired 14 laps from the end suffering an engine problem. He was running 3rd before he retired after he was passed by both David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen.

Race start: Michael Schumacher gets a good start and so does Rubens Barrichello who takes second from David Coulthard. Mika Hakkinen retains 4th spot while Jacques Villeneuve moves from 7th to 5th passing Ralf Schumacher and Eddie Irvine. Heinz Harald Frentzen does the same!

Race order after the first lap: Michael Schumacher ahead of Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard. Hakkinen, Villeneuve and Frentzen make the top 6.

The drivers settle into their positions with no change in the order.

Race order after 5 laps: Michael Schumacher 3.2 seconds ahead of Rubens Barrichello. Coulthard, Hakkinen, Villeneuve and Frentzen make the top 6.

No retirements so far!

Race order after 10 laps: Michael Schumacher 5.0 seconds ahead of Rubens Barrichello. Coulthard is 0.7 seconds behind Barrichello. Hakkinen, Villeneuve and Frentzen make the top 6.

Nick Heidfeld tries to pass his team-mate Jean Alesi forcing him to spin and lose 5 positions!. Jenson Button passes Irvine and Salo in 2 laps to take 9th place.

Race order after 15 laps: Michael Schumacher 5.2 seconds ahead of Rubens Barrichello. Coulthard is 0.9 seconds behind Barrichello. Hakkinen, Villeneuve and Frentzen make the top 6.

Ricardo Zonta spins and crashes into the tyre wall on lap 17.

Johnny Herbert and Jean Alesi pit

Race order after 20 laps: Michael Schumacher 6.2 seconds ahead of Rubens Barrichello. Coulthard is 0.6 seconds behind Barrichello. Hakkinen, Villeneuve and Frentzen make the top 6. Ralf Schumacher, Trulli, Button and Salo make the top 10.

David Coulthard passes Rubens Barrichello while Jacques Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher and Heinz Harald Frentzen all pit.
Mika Hakkinen pits a lap later followed by Michael Schumacher.
David Coulthard pits followed by Rubens Barrichello.

Race order after 26 laps: Michael Schumacher 5.3 seconds ahead of David Coulthard. Mika Hakkinen is 1.8 seconds behind. Rubens Barrichello, Villeneuve and Trulli make the top 6.

Coulthard reduces the gap to 1.9 seconds to Michael Schumacher.

Race order after 32 laps: Michael Schumacher 1.3 seconds ahead of David Coulthard. Mika Hakkinen is 2.4 seconds behind Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello, Villeneuve and Trulli make the top 6.

Gaston Mazzacane retires.

The gap between Coulthard and Michael Schumacher is down to 0.5 seconds.

Race order after 36 laps: Michael Schumacher 0.5 seconds ahead of David Coulthard. Mika Hakkinen is 0.4 seconds behind Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello, Villeneuve and Trulli make the top 6.

Alexander Wurz retires after attempting to pass Jean Alesi but outbraking himself and getting stuck in the gravel trap!

Rubens closes on the top 3 as Michael Schumacher appears to be holding up both McLaren's

David Coulthard passes Michael Schumacher on lap 40.

Race order after 40 laps: David Coulthard ahead of Michael Schumacher. Mika Hakkinen is third. Rubens Barrichello, Villeneuve and Trulli make the top 6.

Heinz Harald Frentzen makes his second pit stop followed by Trulli a lap later
Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen pit together and rejoin in the same order.
Rubens Barrichello pits and spends a long time because of a problem with the front tyre.
David Coulthard is the last of the top 4 top pit and rejoins in the lead.

Race order after 45 laps: David Coulthard ahead of Michael Schumacher. Mika Hakkinen is third. Rubens Barrichello, Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher make the top 6.

Ralf Schumacher pits.

Race order after 50 laps: David Coulthard 5.4 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher. Mika Hakkinen is 1.1 seconds behind Michael. Rubens Barrichello, Villeneuve and Trulli make the top 6.

Ralf Schumacher passes Jarno Trulli for 6th.

Marc Gene and Jean Alesi spin and retire.

Race order after 55 laps: David Coulthard 8.3 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher. Mika Hakkinen is 0.8 seconds behind Michael. Rubens Barrichello, Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher make the top 6.

David Coulthard increases the gap to 10 seconds while Mika Hakkinen passes Michael Schumacher then Michael Schumacher retires with engine problems.

Race order after 60 laps: David Coulthard ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello. Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

Race order after 65 laps: David Coulthard 14.2 seconds ahead of Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello, Jacques Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

Eddie Irvine pits for the 4th time!, he is 2 laps down.

Final Result: David Coulthard 15 seconds ahead of Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello is third ahead of  Jacques Villeneuve. Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.
