Austrian Grand Prix Race Report.

Mika Hakkinen wins the Austrian Grand Prix convincingly beating his team-mate David Coulthard who finished 2nd 12 seconds behind. Rubens Barrichello was 3rd 33 seconds behind Hakkinen. Jacques Villeneuve was 4th ahead of a surprise Jenson Button and Mika Salo.

Only the top 3 finished on the same lap and 12 cars made it to the finish.

This result has moved McLaren ahead of Ferrari in the constructor's championship while Michael Schumacher's lead in the driver's championship has shrunk to just 6 points to David Coulthard and 8 points to Mika Hakkinen. It was another bad day for Jordan with both cars retiring before lap 10. Benetton had 1 retirement and a 9th place. Williams never expected to score 2 points after qualifying in 18th and 19th positions, they are now 3rd in the constructors championship 1 point ahead of Benetton. The result is also a confidence boost for Jenson who has been under pressure to perform. BAR looked promising before the race and a good race strategy for Jacques Villeneuve put him in 4th place scoring more points for BAR and as a result moving ahead of Jordan in the constructors championship.

Interesting facts: David Coulthard finishes 2nd for the 4th year in a row here. Coulthard has now managed to finish in all the races this season expect Australia as was disqualified in Brazil. It is Giancarlo Ficishella's first retirement of the season and Michael Schumacher's 2nd retirement in a row and his 3rd in 4 races. This is the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix of 1998 that the top 3 qualifiers finish in the same order in the race.

Austrian GP - Lap by Lap: Just minutes before the warm-up lap started, Luciano Burti is forced to start from the pit lane after he experienced problems with his race car and had to use the spare.

The race started with a 1st corner multi-car collision with several cars touching. Ricardo Zonta touched the back of Michael Schumacher's car forcing him into a spin, Jarno Trulli touched the back of Barrichello who went over the gravel to avoid a spinning Michael Schumacher but Trulli just hit Schumacher. Behind them Pedro Diniz moved across violently and touched Fisichella forcing him into the barrier, Fisichella's car bounced back onto the circuit only to stop right next to Michael Schumacher's damaged car!. Ralf Schumacher hits Fisichella and damages his front wing. Jos Verstappen also suffers damage to his front wing as a result.
The order on the track gets mixed up as some of the drivers lose positions while trying to avoid the accident. The safety car is brought in for 2 laps until all the damaged cars are cleared.

Order after lap 3 -  Mika Hakkinen ahead of David Coulthard and Mika Salo. Pedro de la Rosa, Johnny Herbert and Jenson Button make the top 6.

As soon as the safety car pits, Pedro de la Rosa manages to pass Mika Salo and Rubens Barrichello manages to pass Jenson Button and Johnny Herbert.

Order after lap 10 - Mika Hakkinen ahead of David Coulthard and Pedro de la Rosa. Rubens Barrichello, Mika Salo and Johnny Herbert make the top 6.

Ralf Schumacher pits to change the front wing after being involved in the first corner incident while Jos Verstappen retires with engine problems on lap 15.
Ricardo Zonta and Pedro Diniz both receive 10 second stop and go penalties. Zonta's penalty was due to bumping into Schumacher's car while Pedro Diniz's was because he moved across Fisichella's path.

Order after lap 20 - Mika Hakkinen 6.5 seconds ahead of David Coulthard and Pedro de la Rosa. Rubens Barrichello, Mika Salo and Johnny Herbert make the top 6

Hakkinen increases the gap to 10 seconds while Alesi pits on lap 25.

Order after lap 30 - Mika Hakkinen 14 seconds ahead of David Coulthard and Pedro de la Rosa. Rubens Barrichello, Mika Salo and Johnny Herbert make the top 6

Pedro de la Rosa pits on lap 33 and retires due to gearbox trouble, Barrichello moves into 3rd place.
Mika Hakkinen laps Johnny Herbert who is in 5th place and Mika Salo in 4th. Only 3 drivers are on the same lap.

Hakkinen pits on lap 37 and Coulthard leads but has yet to stop.

On the final lap Alexander Wurz attempts to pass Marc Gene in 8th position but fails allowing Pedro Diniz to overtake him.

Final Order: Mika Hakkinen ahead of David Coulthard by 12:535 seconds. Rubens Barrichello, Jacques Villeneuve, Jenson Button and Mika Salo make the top 6.
