Monaco Grand Prix Race Report

David Coulthard wins the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Giancarlo Fisichella. Eddie Irvine, Mika Salo and Mika Hakkinen make the top 6.

Typical of Monaco, very few cars managed to finish with only 9 cars classified and 5 cars on the same lap. There were more crashes than mechanical failures.

Michael Schumacher appeared set to win his 5th race here at Monaco after leading the race by more than 30 seconds. He suffered a suspension problem due to overheating from a broken exhaust on lap 56. No driver has yet won from pole this season. The race also saw Eddie Irvine score the first points for the Jaguar team and Mika Hakkinen was actually lapped by his teammate David Coulthard but this was mainly due to brake and gearbox problems that Hakkinen suffered from during the race. Ralf Schumacher injured his leg as a result of his crash, he suffered a deep cut and had to have stiches on his leg.

Race Start: On the formation lap, Pedro Diniz appeared to have stalled and after almost a minute he managed to get going with the help of the mechanics. Meanwhile the cars are forming on the grid when Alexander Wurz experienced a problem with his car which forced the start to be aborted.

The restart appeared to be fine with the top drivers all getting away without problems, at the back of the grid though, Pedro de la Rosa and Jenson Button touched, de la Rosa spun and blocked the track, all the drivers behind him were stuck forcing a red flag situation. Several drivers ran back to the pits to get into the spare car in time, a few managed to get away from the pits in time but several drivers had to start from the pits including Alexander Wurz and Jenson Button.

The race finally gets underway after 30 minutes with the top 5 getting away cleanly and maintaining their positions. Rubens Barrichello drops to 8th from 6th while Ralf Schumacher moves from 9th to 6th. Alesi is in 7th place.
