Hungarian Grand Prix Race Report.

Mika Hakkinen wins ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello is 4th ahead of Ralf Schumacher and Heinz Harald Frentzen.
Jarno Trulli, Eddie Irvine, Jenson Button and Mika Salo make the top 10.
For the first time this season, Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by two points in the drivers championship while McLaren lead Ferrari by a single point in the constructors championship.

Mika Hakkinen made another superb start and went from 3rd to 1st and never looked back. He gave the lead to Coulthard for a single lap when he went in for his first pit stop. Towards the end of the race he had a 27 second cushion between himself and Michael Schumacher before he started to slow down.
Michael Schumacher on the other hand appeared to struggle with the car and at no point in the race did he threaten Mika Hakkinen. He stayed on the defensive successfully keeping David Coulthard behind him.
David Coulthard was stuck behind Michael Schumacher as he failed to pass him on the track or in the pits. The second pit stop was very close but Michael Schumacher managed to stay ahead. Coulthard stayed under a second behind Michael Schumacher for the last third of the race.
Rubens Barrichello had a race on his own after passing Ralf Schumacher through the pits. He finished 44 seconds behind Mika Hakkinen.

There were no major incidents throughout the race and due to the nature of the circuit and the modern F1 car there was very little overtaking. Although Jacques Villeneuve, Eddie Irvine and Jarno Trulli did overtake a number of cars throughout the race.
The top 6 however virtually remained the same from the first lap till the end apart from Rubens Barrichello passing Ralf Schumacher through the pits.

Lap by Lap:

The race started under sunny and hot conditions with temperatures at 32 degrees. Gaston Mazzacane started form the pit lane.

Race start: All cars getaway and Mika Hakkinen takes the lead form 3rd on the grid ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Ralf Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.
David Coulthard just manages to keep Ralf Schumacher behind!.

Jacques Villeneuve touches the back of Pedro de la Rosa losing his front wing. Both pit and rejoin at the back!

Order on lap 5: Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 1.5 seconds. David Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6. No retirements so far.

Giancarlo Fisichella spins and rejoins in 15th position.
Eddie Irvine manages to overtake Jenson Button for 7th place. Jacques Villeneuve overtakes Pedro de la Rosa for 21st place.

Order on lap 10: Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 4.5 seconds. David Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6. No retirements so far.

Jean Alesi pits and retires with suspension problems while Mika Hakkinen laps Pedro de la Rosa and then Jacques Villeneuve.

Order on lap 15: Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 5.2 seconds. David Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.

Giancarlo Fisichella pits a few laps after his spin and rejoins just ahead of Jacques Villeneuve in 19th place.

Order on lap 20: Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 7.2 seconds. David Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.

Rubens Barrichello is closing the gap on Ralf Schumacher while Eddie Irvine is catching Heinz Harald Frentzen in 6th but then pits.
Jacques Villeneuve passes Giancarlo Fisichella and Gaston Mazzacane.
Nick Heidfeld pits and retires with electrical problems.

Order on lap 25: Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 6.9 seconds. David Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.

Michael Schumacher pits and rejoins in 5th place behind Rubens Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher.

Giancarlo Fisichella retires with brake balance problems.
David Coulthard is catching Michael Schumacher, gap down to 3 seconds as both are passing back markers.

Order on lap 40: Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 15 seconds. David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.

Mika Hakkinen loses some time going through a number of backmarkers.

Order on lap 45: Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 15 seconds. David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.

Marc Gene receives a 10 second stop and go penalty for ignoring blue flags causing Eddie Irvine to be stuck behind him for a number of laps.
Rubens Barrichello makes his 2nd pit stop followed by Michael Schumacher a couple of laps later. Ralf Schumacher also pits.
Coulthard pits and rejoins just behind Michael Schumacher. Mika Hakkinen pits a lap later and retains the lead.

Order following all the second pit stops: Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 25 seconds. David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.
Everyone behind Frentzen has been lapped.

Johnny Herbert spins as Jacques Villeneuve overtakes him!

Order on lap 60: Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 26 seconds. David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.
David Coulthard still chasing Michael Schumacher without being able to pass.
Pedro Diniz retires with a powertrain problem.

Order on lap 65: Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 28 seconds. David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.

Johnny Herbert spins again as Jos Verstappen overtakes him!. He retires due to gearbox problems.

Order on lap 70: Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 20.5 seconds. David Coulthard is only 0.5 seconds behind, Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.

Gaston Mazzacane retires with a blown engine.
Mika Hakkinen slows his pace as he has a large buffer between himself and Michael Schumacher.
Jarno Trulli (the only driver on a single pit stop) passes Jenson Button for 7th place and so does Eddie Irvine. Button was nursing his car which was suffering from loss of power.

3 laps to go and it is Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 14 seconds. David Coulthard is only 0.5 seconds behind, Rubens Barrichello, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Ralf Schumacher  make the top 6.

Final Result: Mika Hakkinen wins ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello is 4th ahead of Ralf Schumacher and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.
Jarno Trulli, Eddie Irvine, Jenson Button and Mika Salo make the top 10.
