British Grand Prix Saturday Practice and Qualifying

First Practice Session:

David Coulthard sets the fastest time during the first practice session ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher. Ralf Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.

The session started with a very wet track, Heinz Harald Frentzen was the first to set a fast time but was quickly followed by Michael Schumacher who set a time 3 seconds faster than Frentzen. With several cars on the track a dry line started to emerge and lap times started to drop. With 20 minutes into the session, Jenson Button goes off into the mud and seconds later Eddie Irvine crashes into him. Luckily both drivers were not injured but it could have been a disaster.

With 5 minutes to go, David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen manage to set fast times putting them at the head of the pack followed by Michael Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello.

Several drivers spin wildly with Marc Gene, Ricardo Zonta and Michael Schumacher all managing to recover but moments before the session ended, Pedro Diniz spins and crashes his car into the tyre barrier. Giancarlo Fisichella was the only driver not to set a fast lap as his car suffered an oil leak.

It is very hard to compare the times under wet conditions as the track conditions change every minute. Qualifying position will highly depend on the track condition at the time and therefore will be close to a lottery !!.

Second Practice Session:

Mika Hakkinen sets the fastest time during the second practice session ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

Both Jordan's were the first out of the pits but it was Michael Schumacher who was the first to improve his time. Jarno Trulli, Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard also improve. Fisichella finally manages to set a fast time after the engine in his car was replaced and sets the eighth fastest time.

With 17 minutes into the session, both Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher improve with Michael setting the fastest time of the day.

Midway into the session, Jean Alesi heads back to the pits with a blown engine while Jacques Villeneuve narrowly misses the tyre barrier after spinning and rejoins the track.

With 5 minutes to go, Pedro Diniz sets a fast time after sitting out for most of the session as his car was being repaired. Neither Jenson Button nor Eddie Irvine went out during this session as their cars were still being repaired.

In the dying moments of the session, Mika Hakkinen sets the fastest time of the session 0.228 seconds faster than Michael Schumacher's best time.

Qualifying Session:

Rubens Barrichello grabs pole position for the British GP just 0.003 seconds ahead of Heinz Harald Frentzen. Mika Hakkinen was 3rd only 0.038 seconds behind. David Coulthard, Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button make the top 6.

All the top times were set during the final minute of the session as the track continued to dry. There are a few surprises but that is expected in a situation like this. With provisional pole going to no less than 7 drivers during the session, it is actually more like a lottery !!.

The session started under damp conditions but it was not raining, several drivers left the pits immediately just in case it rained afterwards. With 5 minutes into the session Rubens Barrichello grabs pole ahead of Pedro de la Rosa and Marc Gene.

10 minutes into the session and it was Heinz Harald Frentzen on pole ahead of Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli. With 15 minutes into the session, Mika Hakkinen grabs provisional pole ahead of David Coulthard and Jacques Villeneuve.

23 minutes into the session and Rubens Barrichello grabs provisional pole ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Jarno Trulli. Midway through the session, things were quite as everyone appeared to be fine tuning their cars for the final few laps.

With the track drying, a few drivers head back to the track and the first drivers to improve were Jenson Button moving into second, Marc Gene moving into 4th and Ricardo Zonta moving into 6th. That didn't stay for long as Michael Schumacher grabs provisional pole ahead of David Coulthard and Jacques Villeneuve.

With 15 minutes to go, it was Mika Hakkinen ahead of Michael Schumacher and Heinz Harald Frentzen. With 5 minutes to go, it was Jacques Villeneuve on provisional pole ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher.

In the last 2 minutes, all the cars were on the track and with the track drying, several drivers claimed provisional pole only to lose it seconds later. In the end it was Rubens Barrichello ahead of Heinz Harald Frentzen and Mika Hakkinen.

Certainly an exciting race tomorrow.
