There were no major incidents during the session.

It is very hard to predict what will happen in qualifying as we don't know what the teams are running in terms of tyres and fuel loads. However Jordan and Williams appear strong while Ferrari appear to be struggling.
Should be an interesting qualifying session!

Qualifying Session:

Mika Hakkinen grabs pole position 0.773 seconds ahead of Jarno Trulli in second and an impressive Jenson Button in third. Michael Schumacher is 4th ahead of David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher. Villeneuve, Frentzen, Herbert and Barrichello make the top 10.

Mika was the only driver to set a time under the 1:51 mark. Equally impressive were Jarno Trulli in the Jordan and Jenson Button in the Williams (in his first appearance at Spa in a Formula 1 car) both not just outqualifying their teammates but also Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard.

Rubens Barrichello had a bad session only managing 10th behind Johnny Herbert in the Jaguar!. Benetton were the worst off as they had problems with both their cars and ended up with only the spare car for both drivers to qualify with. Wurz had an engine failure on his first lap while Fisichella had to abandon his car too. Both eventually qualified in 11th for Fisichella and 19th for Wurz!

On the last run of the session, Jean Alesi spun at the bus stop causing a yellow flag situation which forced all the drivers behind him to slow down.

With the exception of Wurz and Fisichella who only managed 5 of their allowed 12 laps, all other drivers ran 11 or 12 laps.

So while Mika Hakkinen appears untouchable, the gap between 2nd and 8th is just half a second which indicates that Jordan, Williams, Ferrari and BAR are close here and with Coulthard stuck in 5th place, the race should be an exciting one!

15 Min - Hakkinen grabs provisional pole with a time of 1:51.680. (99 Pole is 1:50.329)

17 Min - Alexander Wurz blows an engine. Bad Luck!

17 Min - Gene, Villeneuve, Zonta, de la Rosa go out on their first run

19 Min - Villeneuve goes 2nd with a time of 1:52.857

38 Min - Top 6: Hakkinen, Trulli, M Schumacher,  Button, Villeneuve, Barrichello

40 Min - Benetton are in a crisis with Fisichella and Wurz suffering problems

47 Min - Michael Schumacher goes fastest in the first 2 sectors but loses time to traffic on his third. He improves his time but is still in 3rd

50 Min - Hakkinen goes fastest again with an amazing time of 1:50.646!. Jenson Button moves into 3rd and Ralf Schumacher into 5th.

52 Min - Top 6: Hakkinen, Trulli, Button, Coulthard, M Schumacher, R Schumacher. Barrichello is in 10th

53 Min - Fisichella finally goes out while Barrichello spins but recovers

55 Min - 5 minutes remaining and Hakkinen is 0.773 seconds ahead of Trulli who is in 2nd!

58 Min - Fisichella manages to move into 11th. He is the last driver to set a timed lap!
