Mika Hakkinen wins the US GP ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Jarno Trulli, Eddie Irvine and Nick Heidfeld make the top 6.

Lap 72: Barrichello finally is forced to retire as the engine finally blows up and locks his wheels.

Lap 72: Coulthard passes Barrichello.

Lap 71: Michael Schumacher passes Barrichello but Barrichello doesn't let Coulthard through!

Lap 70: Michael Schumacher has caught up with Barrichello.

Lap 69: Barrichello's car lets out more smoke but he remains on the track.

Lap 68: Barrichello's car lets some smoke. He is in trouble.

Lap 67: Coulthard is 2.337 seconds behind Michael. The gaps between the top 4 seems to have stabilised.

Lap 65: The gap has dropped back under 3 seconds between Hakkinen and Barrichello

Lap 64: Hakkinen appears to be increasing the gap to Barrichello slightly. He leads by over 3 seconds.

Lap 63: Coulthard is 2.265 seconds behind Michael.

Lap 62: Hakkinen increases the gap to 2.8 to Barrichello.

Lap 61: Hakkinen laps Alesi while Barrichello stays behind.

Lap 60: Hakkinen leads Barrichello by under 3 seconds. 

Lap 59: Hakkinen loses another tenth of second to Barrichello. Coulthard in 4th is catching Michael Schumacher too.

Lap 58: Barrichello drops the gap by a tenth.

Lap 56: Hakkinen leads Barrichello by 3.4 seconds.

Lap 55: Barrichello continues to close onto Hakkinen.

Lap 54: Order - Hakkinen, Barrichello, M Schumacher, Coulthard, Trulli, Heidfeld, Irvine and Alesi. Retirements: Villeneuve, Verstappen, Yoong, Montoya, R Schumacher, Alonso, Raikkonen.

Lap 53: Barrichello is trying to catch Hakkinen. The gap is 5.46 seconds.

Lap 52: Pedro de la Rosa pits for his first stop while Irvine has yet to stop!

Lap 51: Michael Schumacher is in 3rd ahead of David Coulthard.

Lap 50: Barrichello pits for his second stop. He rejoins in second behind Hakkinen.

Lap 49: Barrichello leads Hakkinen by 21.3 seconds but has yet to stop.

Lap 48: Order - Barrichello, Hakkinen, M Schumacher, Coulthard, Heidfeld, Irvine, Trulli and Alesi. Retirements: Yoong, Montoya, R Schumacher, Alonso, Raikkonen.

Lap 46: Hakkinen pits. He rejoins ahead of Michael Schumacher in 2nd. Barrichello is in the lead but has yet to stop as he is on a 2 stopper.

Lap 46: McLaren pit crew ready for Hakkinen.

Lap 45: Order - Hakkinen, Barrichello, M Schumacher, Coulthard. Retirements: Montoya, R Schumacher, Raikkonen.

Lap 44: Pedro de la Rosa and Jacques Villeneuve touch but neither retires. Villeneuve pits.

Lap 43: Coulthard pits from second and rejoins behind Michael Schumacher in 4th.

Lap 43: McLaren pit crew get ready.

Lap 42: Hakkinen is going through backmarkers but still has not stopped.

Lap 41: Order - Hakkinen, Coulthard, Barrichello, M Schumacher. Retirements: Montoya, R Schumacher, Raikkonen.

Lap 39: Hakkinen takes the lead ahead of Coulthard. Both have yet to stop.

Lap 39: Juan Pablo Montoya retires with a problem. Michael Schumacher pits.

Lap 37: Ralf Schumacher seems to make a mistake and spins off and is stuck in the gravel trap.

Lap 36: Montoya rejoins in 5th. Michael Schumacher leads ahead of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard. Those three have yet to stop.

Lap 34: Montoya immediately builds a gap to Michael.

Lap 33: Montoya passes Schumacher on the inside of turn 1. Very aggressive.

Lap 33: Montoya has closed up again.

Lap 32: Montoya lost a bit of time on this lap but remains under a second behind Michael.

Lap 31: Order - M Schumacher, Montoya, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Barrichello, Trulli, Alesi and R Schumacher. Retirements: Raikkonen.

Lap 30: Montoya doesn't appear to be able to close to Michael in the infield. The gap is still under a second.

Lap 29: Montoya seems to be on a single stopper as is Michael. Montoya is under a second behind Michael.

Lap 28: Order - M Schumacher, Montoya, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Barrichello, Trulli, Alesi and R Schumacher. Retirements: Raikkonen.

Lap 27: Barrichello pits and Michael Schumacher takes the lead.

Lap 27: Ferrari getting ready most likely for Barrichello.

Lap 26: Montoya very close to Michael. 

Lap 25: Montoya is under a second behind Michael. 

Lap 24: Ralf Schumacher pits. He must be on a 2 stopper. 12.5 seconds - slow. He rejoins in 9th

Lap 23: Williams getting ready for a stop. Barrichello catching Tomas Enge in 21st.

Lap 22: Ralf Schumacher is also flying. He set the fastest lap of the race so far with a 1:14.706.

Lap 22: Order - Barrichello, M Schumacher, Montoya, R Schumacher, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Heidfeld and Trulli. Retirements: Raikkonen.

Lap 21: Another fastest lap for Barrichello with a 1:14.767. He is trying to build a big enough gap so he pits ahead of the Williams.

Lap 21: So far only a single retirement - Kimi Raikkonen.

Lap 20: Barrichello continues setting the pace with another fastest lap of 1:15.105

Lap 19: Michael in second is now just 2.2 seconds ahead of Montoya.

Lap 18: Order - Barrichello, M Schumacher, Montoya, R Schumacher, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Heidfeld and Trulli. Retirements: Raikkonen.

Lap 17: Coulthard in 7th is being challenged by Heidfeld. The gap is just 0.7 seconds.

Lap 16: While Barrichello increases his lead over Michael, Montoya and Ralf are catching Michael.

Lap 15: Barrichello is 8 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher. Montoya is under 4 seconds behind Michael.

Lap 14: Order - Barrichello, M Schumacher, Montoya, R Schumacher, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Heidfeld and Trulli.

Lap 14: Jean Alesi takes 9th from Button.

Lap 13: Jenson Button is dropping back to Trulli and Alesi in 10th is catching him.

Lap 12: Barrichello sets another fastest lap with a 1:15.179

Lap 11: Jarno Trulli passes Jenson Button for 8th.

Lap 10: Order - Barrichello, M Schumacher, Montoya, R Schumacher, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Heidfeld and Button.

Lap 9: Jenson Button in the Benetton is looking strong in 8th place. Fisichella is running in 10th sandwiched between the 2 Jordan's

Lap 8: Barrichello is now 3.5 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher. Montoya is 7.2 seconds behind Barrichello.

Lap 7: Order - Barrichello, M Schumacher, Montoya, R Schumacher, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Heidfeld and Button.

Lap 6: Rubens Barrichello sets the fastest lap of the race with a 1:15.355. Raikkonen retires as a result of his coming together with Heidfeld and Trulli.

Lap 5: Barrichello passes Michael Schumacher. It appears that Barrichello is on a lighter fuel load. Montoya struggling and appears to be holding Ralf up.

Lap 4: Order - M Schumacher, Barrichello, Montoya, R Schumacher, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Heidfeld and Button.

Lap 3: Barrichello catching Michael Schumacher.

Lap 2: Barrichello in 3rd manages to pass Montoya for second place. Kimi Raikkonen is sandwiched between Heidfeld and Trulli and his front wing gets damaged and has to pit.

Lap 1: Order - Michael Schumacher, Montoya, Barrichello, R Schumacher, Hakkinen and Coulthard.

Race start: Michael Schumacher leads ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya. Barrichello is 3rd ahead of Ralf Schumacher who lost 2 places.

Mika Hakkinen will start from 4th on the grid after leaving the pit lane during the warm-up session this morning under red. He was stripped off his best time in qualifying. Formation lap in 10 minutes
