Juan Pablo Montoya wins his first ever Formula 1 race ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher. Michael Schumacher, Pedro de la Rosa and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6. 
Raikkonen, Alesi, Panis, Fisichella, Heidfeld, Enge and Alonso finish the race.

Lap 51: 3 laps to go and it looks like it is settled now unless someone runs into problems.

Lap 50: Montoya leads Barrichello by 6 seconds. Ralf Schumacher is 3rd 11.8 seconds behind the leader.

Lap 49: Bernoldi retires as well.

Lap 48: Order - Montoya, Barrichello, R Schumacher, M Schumacher, de la Rosa, Villeneuve, Raikkonen, Alesi, Panis  and Fisichella.
Retirements: Yoong, Frentzen, Verstappen, Hakkinen, Irvine, Coulthard, Button and Trulli.

Lap 47: Barrichello moves into second as he passes Ralf. Yoong spins into the gravel.

Lap 47: Montoya leads Ralf by 7.093 seconds. Barrichello trying everything to pass Ralf!

Lap 46: Barrichello wants to pass Ralf as they are fighting for second in the championship. He is under a second behind.

Lap 45: Montoya responds and is now 4.8 seconds in front of Ralf.

Lap 44: Montoya leads Ralf by 4.2 seconds.

Lap 44: It will be interesting to see if Montoya gives way to Ralf as he is fighting for second in the championship.

Lap 43: All the scheduled stops are now completed. It appears that Ferrari's 2 stop strategy didn't work.

Lap 42: Montoya leads from Ralf Schumacher. Barrichello is 3rd and Michael Schumacher is 4th

Lap 41: Michael Schumacher pits for his second pit stop. 6.7 seconds.

Lap 40: Ralf Schumacher sets the fastest lap so far with a 1:25.073.

Lap 39: Barrichello is 13.035 seconds ahead of Montoya. Michael is under a second behind Montoya. Both Ferrari's are expected to make another stop though.

Lap 38: Order - Barrichello, Montoya, M Schumacher, R Schumacher, de la Rosa, Villeneuve, Raikkonen, Alesi, Panis  and Fisichella.
Retirements: Frentzen, Verstappen, Hakkinen, Irvine, Coulthard, Button and Trulli.

Lap 37: Barrichello leads Montoya by over 13 seconds but he is expected to stop again. Ralf is back in 4th place.

Lap 36: Ralf Schumacher takes 7.9 seconds to refuel, his car must have been very heavy.

Lap 36: Ralf Schumacher pits and Barrichello takes the lead.

Lap 35: Ralf Schumacher sets the fastest lap so far with a 1:25.355.

Lap 34: Alesi pits for his second stop while Villeneuve pits for his first stop!

Lap 33: Ralf Schumacher sets the fastest lap so far with a 1:25.487.

Lap 32: Ralf Schumacher leads Barrichello by 4.7 seconds.

Lap 30: Heinz Harald Frentzen retires from 9th!

Lap 29: Ralf Schumacher leads Barrichello by 3.7 seconds. 

Lap 28: Montoya pits. 12 seconds and he is back out again. He rejoins in 3rd.

Lap 27: Verstappen retires. A Williams is about to pit.

Lap 26: Montoya continues to increase his lead. He is 22.1 seconds ahead of Ralf in second. Barrichello is third 25.5 seconds behind Montoya.

Lap 25: Tomas Enge is in 15th place while Alex Yoong is in 17th and last place.

Lap 24: Order - Montoya, R Schumacher, Barrichello (stopped once), M Schumacher (stopped once), de la Rosa, Villeneuve, Alesi (stopped once), Bernoldi, Panis and Frentzen.
Retirements: Hakkinen, Irvine, Coulthard, Button and Trulli.

Lap 24: Montoya increased his lead over Ralf to over 20 seconds. Alesi rejoined in 7th while Raikkonen had a bad stop and he is down in 13th!

Lap 23: Both Alesi (5th) and Raikkonen (6th) pit.

Lap 23: Montoya leads Ralf by 20 seconds. Massive if they are on the same strategy!

Lap 22: It appears that Ferrari have taken a gamble on a 2 stop strategy. It may work for Barrichello but he lost over 6 seconds in the pits!

Lap 22: Order - Montoya, R Schumacher, Barrichello (stopped once), M Schumacher (stopped once), Alesi, Raikkonen, de la Rosa, Villeneuve, Bernoldi and Panis.
Retirements: Hakkinen, Irvine, Coulthard, Button and Trulli.

Lap 21: Mika Hakkinen retires while Verstappen pits!

Lap 20: Barrichello pits. 16.3 seconds after a refuelling problem!. Montoya back in the lead!

Lap 19: Michael Schumacher pits. 10.4 seconds. Looks like a 2 stopper!

Lap 18: Barrichello increases the gap to Montoya to just under 10 seconds. Michael is still trying to get past Montoya while Ralf Schumacher is 22 seconds behind

Lap 17: Alesi takes 5th from Verstappen. Irvine retires.

Lap 16: Alex Yoong spun but recovered. He heads to the pits!

Lap 15: Barrichello is now 7 seconds ahead of Montoya. He sets the fastest lap of the race so far with a 1:25.841

Lap 14: Hakkinen finally passes Bernoldi fro 10th!

Lap 14: Barrichello is now 5 seconds ahead of Montoya, Michael is unable to pass Montoya so far!

Lap 13: Alesi overtakes Raikkonen for 6th place. Irvine down in 18th place.

Lap 13: Order - Barrichello, Montoya, M Schumacher, R Schumacher, Verstappen, Raikkonen, Alesi, de la Rosa, Villeneuve and Bernoldi.
Retirements: Coulthard, Button and Trulli.

Lap 12: Barrichello now leads Montoya by 2 seconds. Michael is just behind Montoya (0.4 seconds).

Lap 11: Ralf Schumacher in 4th is 10 seconds behind. It could be a tyre issue.

Lap 10: Montoya may have a problem, he is now chased by Michael!

Lap 9: Rubens Barrichello overtakes Montoya!

Lap 8: Order - Montoya, Barrichello, M Schumacher, R Schumacher, Verstappen and Raikkonen.
Retirements: Coulthard, Button and Trulli.

Lap 8: Montoya leads Barrichello by a second. Michael is 1.3 seconds behind Barrichello.

Lap 7: David Coulthard is out as well, his engine blew. Verstappen is now up to 5th!

Lap 6: Jenson Button retires with an engine failure, Irvine is in problems, he has dropped back to 12th place. Hakkinen is in 13th place!

Lap 5: The top 4 are close together with David Coulthard in 5th over 7 seconds behind the leader. Verstappen has passed de la Rosa and is in 6th place. He must be on a 2 stopper.

Lap 5: Juan Pablo Montoya is flying, he sets the fastest lap so far with a 1:26.089.

Lap 4: Irvine in 7th makes a mistake and drops to places to 9th. Verstappen now in 7th place!

Lap 3: Montoya leads Barrichello by 0.9 seconds. Michael Schumacher is 0.5 seconds behind Barrichello.

Lap 2: It was an amazing start from Verstappen who started from 19th, he is now in 8th place!

Lap 1: Order - Montoya, Barrichello, M Schumacher, R Schumacher, Coulthard and de la Rosa.

Race start: Button had a good start but lost his nose as a result of a touch with Trulli.

Race start: A relatively clean start although Trulli is pushed off. Montoya leads from Barrichello

Formation lap: All the cars on the grid got away cleanly. Fisichella and Heidfeld will start from the pits.

Both Fisichella (14th on the grid) and Heidfeld (8th on the grid) had their cars pulled off the grid due to problems. The will start from the pit-lane. Formation lap in 2 minutes

During the drivers meeting there was general agreement that no overtaking occurs on the first two chicanes of the track. Jacques Villeneuve disagreed and some teams have asked their driver to race from the start. Formation lap in 5 minutes

There has been another sad event this week with the news that Alex Zanardi is in a critical condition following a horrific crash during the inaugural German 500.
