A spokesman for the family said that Tyrell died in the early hours of Saturday at his home in Surrey.
Ken Tyrell formed the Tyrell Racing Team in 1970 and won the
Constructors' Championship in 1971 with Jackie Stewart and Francois Cevert
driving for the team. Tyrell came second in the Constructor's Championship
in '72 and '73 with Jackie Stewart winning another Drivers' Championship

success they achieved. The last win the team had was with Michele Alboreto
at the 1983 US GP in Detroit. Jackie Stewart paid tribute to Ken Tyrell and said "Ken was the most important person in my life outside my family. He was so much more than the team owner and team manager. Ken was like a father. Ken Tyrrell did not just take an interest in his drivers, he really cared in the deepest sense about everyone who worked with him. We didn't have a contract after our first year because, quite simply, we didn't need one. In his time, Ken was simply the best." their option they had on him. Giancarlo Fisichella said "I am very happy indeed to be coming back to the team where I enjoyed so much success and happy times in 1997. I look forward very much to joining my old friends there and to working with Eddie Jordan and his team towards future success." It is now expected that Jarno Trulli will take Fisichella's place at Benetton after Benetton exercised an option on him. The highlight of the programme was the first ever Formula 1 2-seater race with 5 cars competing over a 12 lap race distance. Paul Stoddart, Nigel Mansell, Fernando Alonso, Alex Yoong and Tarso Marques were the drivers while the passengers were singer Kelis, businessman Jonathan Frost , ITV's Louise Goodman, the Daily Mirror's Des Kelly and Boyzone's Shane Lynch. On Lap 11 of the race, Nigel Mansell hit the back of Fernando Alonso's car losing the front wing and launching the car off the ground before crashing down. The race was stopped and the results were according to the positions held on the previous lap. Paul Stoddart with Kelis won the race with Nigel Mansell with Jonathan Frost second, Fernando Alonso with Louise Goodman third and Alex Yoong with Des Kelly fourth. Tarso Marques with Shane Lynch retired on lap 5. Nigel Mansell commented on the event by saying "One thing's for sure, you saw a real motor race. I don't know what happened. It appeared as if Fernando slowed down in front of me coming out of the final corner, I hesitated, and I had no time to move out of the way and I just hit the back of the car. Thankfully, and the main thing is, Jonathan and everybody else is fine. It's just one of those hiccups in motor racing. I'm just disappointed for Minardi and Paul because everybody has done such a great job during what has been a terrific day. But we have proved the cars are sensational in terms of strength - although not in the best way." Paul Stoddart added "From where I was sitting, it looked like a fantastic race, but we just never dreamed anything like this would happen. Happily, no one was hurt and what happened does emphasize just how strong the cars are. The aim of Thunder in the Park was to bring Formula One to the people, and I certainly think we accomplished that. We really enjoyed entertaining everybody today, although we hadn't envisaged doing it in quite the way we did!" Jonathon Frost who paid $55,000 for the ride at an auction at the Grand Prix Ball for the Monaco Grand Prix not only experienced a Formula 1 ride but also a Formula 1 crash!. 21-Aug: The Formula 1 teams have returned to testing in preparation for the Belgian Grand Prix on the 2nd of September. has
indicated that while McLaren lacked the consistency that Ferrari had this
season and they have to make sure that they have at least an equal car
next year and said "McLaren are a great team, but I think we all
recognise we haven't performed as well as Ferrari this year. That doesn't
mean we should beat ourselves up over it - it's just the natural cycle of
Formula One. It doesn't come down to one individual failing, it's all of
us. McLaren have yet to announce their driver line-up for 2002 but it appears that David is confident that he'll be there next year and said "Yeah, I feel pretty confident about that. We just have to wait because the team have options, but from my own point of view I haven't been too concerned because I believe I represent the best option McLaren have." David also indicated that his highlight of the year was qualifying on Pole at Monaco and said "At certain moments this season we've had a car which we've been able to extract a lot out of, like in Monaco in qualifying which was the highlight of my year, even more so than my two wins." Reports from the Jaguar team indicate that Niki Lauda the head
of the Premier Performance Division is furious with Jaguar boss Bobby
Rahal over and attempt made by Rahal to offer Eddie Irvine to the Jordan
team replacing Heinz Harald Frentzen. Lauda put a stop to it immediately. 20-Aug: Your thoughts on Michael Schumacher and Ferrari winning both Titles - Have Your Say 20-Aug: Luca Montezemolo has
