Spanish Grand Prix Friday Practice Sessions

First Practice Session:

Michael Schumacher sets the fastest time for the first practice session ahead of teammate Rubens Barrichello and Mika Hakkinen. Ralf Schumacher, Jean Alesi and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

The session was relatively quite with only the slower cars practicing on the track. In fact neither Ferrari nor McLaren put any competitive laps until 10 minutes from the end. David Coulthard did not put in a competitive time and neither did Heinz Harald Frentzen not Jarno Trulli. Jacques Villeneuve managed to put only a slow lap.

The session started with most drivers doing their installation laps and then everything went quite for around 10 minutes. Several drivers went back on the track and midway through the session Alesi spun twice but managed to keep going. Ricardo Zonta's BAR stopped on the track. 10 minutes before the end of the session, Michael Schumacher on his first attempt sets the fastest time 1.5 seconds faster than anyone else. Mika Hakkinen also sets a fast time in 2nd place but 1.3 seconds behind Michael Schumacher. Rubens Barrichello manages to set a time faster than Mika Hakkinen but still more than 0.5 seconds slower than Michael Schumacher.

Let us hope we have a busier second practice session !

 Second Practice Session:

Michael Schumacher could not improve his time during the second session but his time set during the first session was enough to keep him at the top. His brother Ralf Schumacher managed to improve this session and was second ahead of Rubens Barrichello who did not improve on his time. Jarno Trulli was 4th followed by David Coulthard and Jenson Button.

The second session started with more activity right from the start. Villeneuve and Coulthard went out and set competitive times. David Coulthard managed to set a time just 0.1 seconds slower than that set by Rubens Barrichello during the first session. Around the same time, Pedro de la Rosa loses it and gets stuck in the gravel trap.

15 minutes into the session and Jarno Trulli sets his first competitive lap of the day after he had not set a competitive time earlier. He sets the 3rd fastest time. Several drivers are on the track including Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen but couldn't improve on their times. Just before the halfway mark, Fisichella spins and is stuck in the gravel trap.

Most drivers get on the track during the second half of the session including Heinz Harald Frentzen who did not set a competitive time earlier. Most drivers could not improve on their times apart from those who did not set a fast time in the first session. There were a few exceptions though with Ralf Schumacher jumping to second place but still half a second slower than his brother Michael. Ralf's team-mate Jenson Button also improved to 6th place. Pedro Diniz improved almost 1.5 seconds to secure 8th place just behind Mika Hakkinen while Marc Gene improved by more than a second to secure 11th position. It was a very disappointing day however for Jacques Villeneuve who could only manage 21st. Perhaps his back problems are affecting his performance ?
