Malaysian Grand Prix Friday Practice Sessions

First Practice Session:

Michael Schumacher has dominated the first practice session setting a time that is 0.745 seconds faster than his teammate Rubens Barrichello and a massive 1.318 seconds ahead of third place David Coulthard. Mika Hakkinen was 4th. Irvine in 5th place was more than 2.2 seconds off the pace followed by Jacques Villeneuve. Fisichella is 7th. Herbert appearing for the last time in Formula 1 is 8th with Ricardo Zonta in 9th and Alexander Wurz making the top 10.

The pace of the Ferrari's is simply amazing as they appear to have found the right setup almost instantly. It remains to be seen how much the other teams can close the gap over the next 3 sessions before the start of qualifying. It is interesting to see 5 teams in the top 10. Beside both the Ferrari's and the McLaren's, both Jaguar's are the top 10 as the team appears to be on the right track and has been improving steadily since Indianapolis. BAR have 2 cars in the top 10 as they mount their final attack on Benetton in an attempt to move into 4th place in the championship while Benetton also have 2 cars in the top 10 and they need the points to ensure that neither BAR nor Jordan can catch them. Amazingly Fisichella is just 0.001 seconds behind Villeneuve and Wurz is just 0.002 seconds behind Zonta !!

Williams and Jordan are disappointing here so far with Button in 11th, Trulli in 12th while Ralf Schumacher is in 14th and Frentzen is in 15th.

Mika Salo covered the most number of laps this session with 20 followed by Heidfeld and Hakkinen with 19 each. David Coulthard did the least with 7 while Gaston Mazzacane only did 8. Most other drivers covered between 13 and 17 laps.

 Second Practice Session:

Mika Hakkinen and McLaren have responded to Ferrari's blistering pace this morning. Mika Hakkinen appears to have found the right set up and topped the time sheets just 0.014 seconds faster than Michael Schumacher. David Coulthard also improved and finished in 3rd place just 0.236 seconds off the pace. Rubens Barrichello was 4th over half a second behind while Jarno Trulli managed to set the 5th fastest time just over a second off the pace. Ralf Schumacher made big improvements towards the end of the session to finish in 6th place.

Zonta, Wurz, Fisichella and Frentzen make the top 6. It is interesting to see that all the teams fighting for 4th position in the Constructors' championship are in the top 10 (BAR, Benetton and Jordan) with the exception of Villeneuve who had problems with his car that prevented him from doing any laps!.

Both Jagaur's didn't do as well as they did in the first session with Herbert in 13th and Irvine in 14th place.'

Ricardo Zonta did the most laps this session with 23 followed by Gaston Mazzacane with 21. Jacques Villeneuve covered 0 laps while Heidfeld also had problems and only covered 4 laps. Most other drivers covered between 14 and 20 laps.

Overall Zonta covered the most laps today with 39 followed by Button and Hakkinen with 36 laps each. Jacques Villeneuve did the least number of laps with 17, Nick Heidfeld did 23. Most other drivers covered between 27 and 35 laps.

There were no major incidents during both sessions although several drivers spun with Salo spinning and retiring while Hakkinen and Coulthard both spun but recovered.
