German Grand Prix Saturday Practice and Qualifying

First Practice Session:

Mika Hakkinen sets the fastest time this session ahead of a surprise Pedro de la Rosa and David Coulthard. Heinz Harald Frentzen, Mika Salo and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

Minutes before the end of the session, the top 6 was a lot different, however the drying track conditions meant that the lap times will drop quickly towards the end of the session.

Johnny Herbert did the most number of laps with 14 followed by Michael Schumacher, Gaston Mazzacane and Eddie Irvine who all did 13 laps. Jean Alesi did no laps as he spun and was stuck in the gravel trap. His team-mate Nick Heidfeld only did 3 laps. Most drivers did between 7 and 12 laps.

The session started under dry weather conditions but the track was still wet following the heavy rain overnight. Most drivers go out on their installation laps with Eddie Irvine deciding to stay out and set a time with 1:54.533. The cars are on wet tyres while the track dries out.

10 minutes into the session and only Marc Gene and Eddie Irvine have set timed laps so far.

Several more drivers go out on the drying track including David Coulthard and Michael Schumacher with Coulthard setting the fastest time with a 1:52.017 and then improving to 1:50.878.

20 minutes into the session and it is David Coulthard ahead of Jacques Villeneuve and Johnny Herbert. Marc Gene, Jos Verstappen and Pedro de la Rosa make the top 6.

Eddie Irvine and Marc Gene both take a trip through the gravel trap but recover. Ralf Schumacher moves into 2nd position on dry tyres.

Jos Verstappen goes fastest on dry tyres with a time of 148.907. The track seems to now favour dry tyres over wet ones.

15 minutes to go in this 45 minute session and it is Jos Verstappen ahead of David Coulthard and Pedro Diniz. Ralf Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

Jos Verstappen goes even faster improving his time to 1:47.333 while Pedro Diniz moves into second place with a time of 1:49.136

Only 11 drivers have set competitive times as the rest appear to be waiting for a dry track.

Michael Schumacher jumps to first with a time of 1:46.998 while Rubens Barrichello jumps to third with a time of 1:47.784. Mika Hakkinen finally goes out to set a time.

Barrichello goes fastest with a time of 1:45.419, the times are dropping quick!

5 minutes to go and it is Rubens Barrichello ahead of Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve. Johnny Herbert, Mika Hakkinen and Ricardo Zonta make the top 6.

Ralf Schumacher spins and hits the wall while Jean Alesi spins and is stuck in the gravel trap.

In the final 2 minutes, Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard set fastest time but a surprise Pedro de la Rosa splits them.

Final Order: Mika Hakkinen ahead of Pedro de la Rosa and David Coulthard. Heinz Harald Frentzen, Mika Salo and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

Second Practice Session:

Mika Hakkinen sets the fastest time again this session ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

Michael Schumacher spun and hit the tyre barriers on his last flying lap damaging the back of his car. He was fine.

The lap times are much faster than last year with the top 10 drivers setting faster times than that set by Mika Hakkinen last year (1:42.950).
Gaston Mazzacane did the most number of laps this session with 17 followed by Giancarlo Fisichella and Jarno Trulli with 16 laps each. Ralf Schumacher only managed 1 lap while Johnny Herbert only managed 6. The Prost pair of Alesi and Heidfeld didn't do much laps with 8 and 9 laps respectively. Most drivers did between 12 and 15 laps each.

The session started with only a few cars going out including Mika Hakkinen, Jenson Button and Giancarlo Fisichella who goes fastest with a time of 1:43.554

Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello go out on the track to take 1st and 3rd respectively. David Coulthard takes 3rd away from Barrichello moments later.

10 minutes into the session and it is Michael Schumacher ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello, Eddie Irvine and Mika Hakkinen make the top 6.

Michael Schumacher puts in a stunning lap with a time of 1:41.932 a full second faster than the qualifying time set here last year by Mika Hakkinen. Barrichello moves into 2nd place still over a second slower than his team-mate.
Mika Hakkinen moves into 2nd place 0.2 seconds slower than Michael Schumacher.

20 minutes into the session and it is Michael Schumacher ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Jenson Button. Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

Mika Hakkinen goes fastest with a time of 1:41.658 and David Coulthard goes 4th fastest. Jean Alesi and Nick Heidfeld have yet to set a competitive time. Ralf Schumacher still not out this session after hitting the wall during the first session.

30 minutes into the session and it is Mika Hakkinen ahead of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. David Coulthard, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jenson Button make the top 6.

David Coulthard moves into 3rd place just 0.05 seconds slower than Michael Schumacher while Frentzen moves into 5th place.

5 minutes to go in this 45 minute session and it is Mika Hakkinen ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

In the final minutes of the session, Ralf Schumacher and Jean Alesi finally go out on their first runs, Ralf doesn't make it before the chequered flag and does not set a time this session, Alesi managed to go into 18th.

Michael Schumacher crashes into the tyre barrier on his last flying lap while Giancarlo Fisichella suffers an engine failure.

Final Order: Mika Hakkinen ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

Qualifying Session:

David Coulthard grabs his 2nd pole position of the season ahead of Michael Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella. Mika Hakkinen, Pedro de la Rosa and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

The session started with a slightly wet track but heavy showers started 10 minutes into the session causing a strange grid. With the exception of Fisichella and Michael Schumacher, the top 10 was determined just 10 minutes into the session.

Giancarlo Fisichella who spun and had to abandon his car on his first run went out just when the showers eased and managed to move into 2nd place but in the final minute of the session, while the others couldn't improve, Michael Schumacher managed to move from 4th into 2nd place.

The gap between David Coulthard and Michael Schumacher is over 1.3 seconds but that is mainly due to the changing track conditions.

Rubens Barrichello's car stopped on the track on his first lap and had to abandon his car. He only managed to qualify in 18th place towards the end of the session. Frentzen had his best lap taken away from him after missing a chicane at the start of the session. He went back out towards the end of the session and managed 17th fastest.

The session started under rainy conditions and 19 drivers went out in order to set a time before the rain gets heavier. This created a lot of traffic and chaos.

Fisichella spins and is stuck in the gravel trap. Barrichello's car stops and they run back to their spare cars. Jos Verstappen is the only one not to leave within the first few minutes.

Jacques Villeneuve and Marc Gene both spun just after they set a time and have to abandon their cars and go back into the spare.

Order after 10 minutes: David Coulthard ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher. Pedro de la Rosa, Jarno Trulli and Alexander Wurz make the top 6.

The weather situation becomes worse with rain on parts of the circuit and sunshine on other parts !!

Jos Verstappen goes into 10th position. All other top 10 positions remain the same.

Order after 20 minutes: David Coulthard ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher. Pedro de la Rosa, Jarno Trulli and Alexander Wurz make the top 6.

Fisichella goes out in the spare car after his spin and sets the 2nd fastest time on a partly wet track. Soon after, the rain gets heavier!. Michael Schumacher and Jean Alesi go out but abort as there is no chance of improvement.

Order after 30 minutes: David Coulthard ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and Mika Hakkinen. Michael Schumacher, Pedro de la Rosa and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

Barrichello goes out in Michael's car and sets a time of 1:56.723 (last place and above the 107% mark) under very wet conditions. He is the only driver on the track.

Heinz Harald Frentzen's quickest time has been disallowed after going straight through the chicane on his quickest lap. His second best time is 1:55.463 and outside the 107% too.

Order after 40 minutes: David Coulthard ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and Mika Hakkinen. Michael Schumacher, Pedro de la Rosa and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

Marc Gene goes out to try and better his position (he is just 0.002 seconds inside the 107% mark) but the track is very wet. Frentzen goes out to try and get inside the 107% even though the track conditions are not suitable, he returns to the pits as he feels that the track is drying out and is worth waiting a bit more.

With 10 minutes remaining, the order remains the same.

In the final minutes several drivers go out on a seemingly drying track including Frentzen, Barrichello, Hakkinen and both Schumacher's.

Both Frentzen and Barrichello finally manage to get inside the 107% with Frentzen in 17th and Barrichello in 18th and Michael Schumacher moves up to 2nd on a wet track where most other drivers couldn't improve.

Final Order: David Coulthard ahead of Michael Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella. Mika Hakkinen, Pedro de la Rosa and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.
