The World Motor Sport Council met at Seville today and announced the 2001
Formula 1 Schedule. The council decided to include the British Grand Prix (was
provisional) after studying the detailed proposals provided by the Silverstone organisers.
The British GP and Austrian GP have swapped dates with the British GP now taking place on
the 15th of July while the Austrian GP on the 13th of May. A number of changes concerning Formula 1 were introduced and include : Testing Tyres Technical 3-Oct: After accusing David Coulthard of trying really hard to push him wide at the US Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher has reviewed the TV footage and now believes that Coulthard's manoeuvre was quite normal and said "After the race I was very perplexed, from the cockpit I got a certain view of the situation, especially because he made contact with me. But when I looked at the TV footage, it seemed to me that his manoeuvre was quite normal and there was nothing particularly strange about it." Schumacher also expects a repeat of these tactics at Suzuka and possibly Sepang but also expects that his teammate Rubens Barrichello will help him and said "It is clear that at Suzuka, I will expect David will do everything possible to make life hard for me by trying to help Hakkinen, but it is also clear that Barrichello will try and do the same thing for me as well." 2-Oct: "How far should team tactics go?". On the second and final day of testing at Mugello, Michael Schumacher
broke the lap record set just over two weeks ago by McLaren's test driver Olivier Panis.
Schumacher's lap time was 1:24.056 compared to Panis' 1:24.104. He completed a total of 56 laps with a best time of 1:24.709. His testing session was cut short after experiencing a problem with the transmission. Michael Schumacher will continue testing tomorrow. The Sauber team were also present with Kimi Raikkonen and Enrique Bernoldi setting the second and third fastest times. Click here for the Mugello timed results At Silverstone, Jarno Trulli was the fastest man on the track on the second and final day of testing ahead of Eddie Irvine and both BAR test drivers. Trulli's best time was 1:26.463 and completed a total of 76 laps. Click here for the Silverstone timed results At Estoril, the Williams BMW team
completed their second day of testing with Jenson Button driving for
them. He completed a total of 60 laps with a best time of 1:21.482. The session was
interrupted by heavy rain early in the afternoon. Click here for the Estoril timed results Jaguar Racing have named Tomas Scheckter as their development driver for the 2001 season replacing Luciano Burti who will be driving for Jaguar next year. Jaguar's Chairman commented on the announcement by saying "This appointment is further evidence of the steps we are taking to ensure Jaguar Racing will be competitive in the future. Tomas has consistently impressed us with his performances in this year's British Formula 3 Championship with the Stewart Racing team, a division of Jaguar Racing, and the Formula One test we gave him in the Jaguar R1 on 15 August earlier this year. He comes with a great pedigree and of course a father and mentor, Jody, who achieved the highest prize in the sport" The 20-year-old South African was delighted with the announcement and said "It's a very exciting prospect to be involved with this project in such a key role and I'm particularly proud to be associated with Jaguar - one of the most prestigious names in the business. Of course, my ultimate aim is to become a Formula One driver, but before that, there's a job to be done and that job is to ensure next year's Jaguar R2 is as competitive as possible. It's a task I relish." 27-Sep: Ferrari continued testing at Fiorano today with Luca Badoer. He worked on testing new mechanical components as well as tyre testing on a wet track. His best time on dry tyres was 1:00.451 while on wet tyres his best time was 1:09.552. He completed a total of 144 laps. Ferrari now move to Mugello for a test with Michael Schumacher. Click here for the Fiorano timed results At Estoril, the Williams team is conducting a 3-day test. On the first day, Jenson Button broke the lap record set earlier this year by his teammate Ralf Schumacher with a time of 1:20.898 becoming the first to go under the 1:21 mark this year. He completed a total of 77 laps. The team concentrated on aerodynamic and tyre testing. Click here for the Estoril timed results At Silverstone, BAR, Jaguar and Jordan were present. Under damp and windy conditions, Eddie Irvine was the fastest man on the track ahead of Jarno Trulli and both BAR test drivers. His best time was 1:28.311. Irvine also completed the most number of laps with 51 while Darren Manning only completed 19 laps mainly due to the eather conditions. Both Honda powered teams (BAR and Jordan Mugen) are testing new engines to be used at the Japanese GP. Click here for the Silverstone timed results 26-Sep: Michael Schumacher has warned his fans not to party ahead of time as the championship has not been decided yet and said "Let's take it easy when we talk about everything being a done deal. As we say in Germany, it's too early to pack your bags. I never party ahead of time. I never do it. The numbers still don't put us in the clear. It's true we have a privileged position but you should never lose concentration." Schumacher though was very confident about his chances of winning his 3rd world title and the first for Ferrari since 1979 and said "With the Ferrari I have in my hands, I can win everywhere. I will try to do it next in Japan and then finally we can start the party." In an expected move, the main sponsors of the Prost
Formula 1 team, Gauloises Blondes have announced an end to their sponsorship deal. 26-Sep: The Ferrari team was back at work with Luca Badoer testing at Fiorano in preparation for the Japanese GP. Badoer covered a total of 84 laps with a best time of 1:01.350. He also completed 15 practice starts. Testing continues tomorrow. Several other Formula 1 teams will be testing at Silverstone and Estoril later this week. 25-Sep:
Following Ferrari's 8th win of the season and their highest ever points in a season, Ross
Brawn is confident of winning both titles possibly even before the last race at
Malaysia but they will be working hard to achieve that. He said "We would be
delighted to be able to clinch the championship in Suzuka but we're going to have to work
with the thought that it could still go down to the wire. We're going to keep pushing.
Whoever is strongest in Suzuka will probably win the championship. McLaren were good there
last year but we can do a great job and I am sure we can beat them." Ross Brawn used Monza as an example and said "We beat them in Monza in a straight fight and that was a track on which they had previously looked invincible. Now we just need to keep our concentration and stay focused." Ron Dennis on the other hand acknowledges that it will be hard for them to win the title but has not given up and said "Our commitment to winning the world championship remains undiminished. You don't win or lose world championships in one race. This is just a race. There are 20 points remaining and were eight points behind. All Mika has to do is just win the next two races. Now that might sound particularly difficult, but I don't think it is.
