6-Apr: The World Motor Sport Council has announced that should the European Commission Competition Department interpretation of the European Union law prove incompatible with the FIA's world-wide Statutes and the FIA International Sporting Code, then arrangements would be made to treat the European Union as a single country within the membership rules of the FIA and hence holding a strictly limited number of world championship events. The Council has also declared that "pending a clarification of the European Union law, contracts for the FIA World Championship events within the European Union will not be renewed".

The Council also decided to impose a $100,000 fine on the promoters of the Brazilian GP following the 3 incidents of advertising signage falling onto the track during the qualifying session. The penalty was expected to be even more severe including the possibility of a race ban however "due to a combination of different and quite exceptional circumstances" the council decided to impose a fine only.
